Attack of the native Engrish speaker

I was hanging out last night with a JET friend of mine who lives in the somewhat-nearby town of Ōzu. We were discussing the ins and outs of curtains, and how mine don’t block very much light in the morning. I found heavy black curtains at the nearby Dik (that’s yet another story) that claim to block 99.99% of incident light, to the tune of about $50. My friend weighed in on the subject by dropping this bombshell of profundity:

The sun is a jerk. It destroys me.

This proved to be a source of both inspiration and unending hilarity. I immediately whipped out Super Mario Bros. 3 on the emulator and we played far enough to get some key sprites. Then we whipped together this:

It’s too bad we can’t make shirts and sell this. Damn copyrights.

Hey Aaron, hisashiburi and all that crap. That T-shirt design is AWESOME. I think everyone else in the computer lab was giving me weird looks when I busted out laughing. Between this and the roll a fatty design, you should look into the T-shirt biz. Screw physics. By the by, we should all try to get together sometime. When do you have breaks, etc?

Collin > Glad you like the design. I’d print up shirts right away if I wasn’t afraid of getting destroyed by Nintendo’s legal department.

I’ll be in Tokyo on business in late November. If you can make it, we should all hang out. I’ll email you details later.

i’m pretty sure all the copyrights are out of date on the original NES.

I know they are for the system its self.

Although possibly not on the main characters such as mario, but im sure the sun is available they havent used him in video games since back then.

    i could be wrong though.

robbieruckus > I know patents can expire on that timescale, but copyright is much, much longer (death of creator plus 70-something years; whatever is required to prevent Mickey Mouse from falling into public domain). But what does Nintendo care about some blog?

    Knock yourself out.

Hey, that is an awesome idea for a t-shirt!
I was wondering if you would let me make it into a t-shirt? Not to sell or anything. Just for myself to wear because I am an uber nerd, and love Nintendo. I would even pay you something for it if you want :)

Be my guest, make whatever you like out of it.
