When I ate 給食 with students I used to tell them that natto's stringy, sticky nature prevented their bodies from growing to their full height, and they should stop eating it if they wanted to be tall. The teachers and I had a good laugh about that. Then I would trade my natto for someone's milk. So there are some schools that are pretty freewheeling about the whole deal. I’m late to this party but I wanted to add this image in the interest of globalization.
