Re. kanji lookup in e-dictionaries, most modern ones (certianly my five-year-old Casio) allow searches via any reading of the component /s (部品) rather that the actual radical (部首). Once I'd worked this out, I found that I could find almost any character very easily.「部品読み検索」 gives it away really.
Maybe not for everyone, but these dictionaries are fantastic tools for learners of Japanese.
Thanks for the blog.

So I'm at Sunrise Tode. The food in the mini cafeteria is good and cheap (although bigger portions would be a plus). I'm disappointed by the fact that I cannot bring friends (i.e. girls) and that the showers are public (and what is more, there are no shower slippers, which is kind of gross considering the fact that god knows how many salarymen took showers there after a sweaty day at the office. People here are worried of H1N1 but I'm more worried about athlete's foot...)
I'll stay here a bit longer and see how it is. I'll try to post an update just in case someone else comes to Sunrise Tode and reads this blog.
cheers

Hi Daniele. I know Sunrise Tode has changed since I was there, so not all of my criticisms apply anymore. For instance I know they have a few Japanese students living there full-time.

I don't think I'd bother trying to switch out. For one thing, I'm fairly sure the administration would have zero interest in accommodating you. Your only other option would be to find a place on your own. And it's really not that far from campus, certainly not as far as Narita.

Either way, enjoy your time in Japan!

I am planning to go to Sunrise Tode in September. Should I ask if I can get into some other residence instead? It seems like it's quite a ways from school....almost as far as Narita Airport but in the other direction. Would you advise I look for alternate accommodations?
Thanks!

The department stores still haven't changed. One advantage for the store is it makes it much harder to use all kinds of haggling tactics to bring the price down. Also, more employment is good. There are a LOT of peasants to deal with.

Nowadays both 北京 and 上海 transit systems have a card you can add money to. 北京 also has all kinds of crazy (but half-asleep) security in their stations, complete with luggage scanners and bomb-disposal robots.

This is what I tend to do as well, though I'm in China not Japan. When people from abroad need to send me stuff I don't require them to trace out characters but instead just assume the postal workers know or can make sense of the standard transliteration system. Of course, the postal codes are still a must since that introduces more than a little ambiguity.

Agreed. Not being a Christian, a conservative or a republican, it's nice finally getting a little bit of that 'representation' feeling.

Stumbled across your blog through a Lost Laowai post comment. Good stuff! I spent some time studying Japanese and living in Japan in university and still try to keep up a little bit online.

Cheers.

You are right, you are not the only one who noticed Obama's words (it was very smart to include that, I think). I was delighted as well, and of course my religious views are the same as yours. I almost posted a comment on this (previously) on my Facebook face, where my (non)religious views are clearly stated, but at the last minute, I decided not too, because I did not want to offend anyone. Of course, this is a silly thought, but it shows me that even I, a liberal with a very strong belief in separation of church and state, want to sometimes keep a low profile. As you said, the atheists are not a popular bunch. I am delighted to see that W is no longer in charge. The conversation above makes me cringe.

Found your blog through Corinne McKay's, I like it! Adding to my RSS feed.
